50 Christmas Ducks Idea
The elves hid 50 Christmas ducks around the classroom a few days
ago and left a note saying if the class could find them all before Christmas break, Santa will give them an extra surprise. They are all
numbered, so the children are finding them and putting them in order. They have been
occupied for days now trying to find them. Plus it helps with their number
recognition and ordering. Best idea ever.

A Very Thought-Provoking Photograph
This is a photo taken during the Great Depression, showing four children celebrating Christmas with a dinner of turnips and cabbage. This could start a discussion among your students about how children celebrated the holidays then, and compare them with the way they celebrate today.

Candy Cane Patterns
A great way to review patterning is to have the children make candy canes! After reviewing the different kinds of patterns we've learned so far (AB, AAB, ABB, AABB), each child gets a sheet of construction paper with a single black line drawn on it (for them to follow.) They also get a strip of red and a strip of white construction paper. They tear the strips into small pieces and glue them onto the pattern (fine motor skills!). When they bring their finished work to me, I have them identify which pattern they used.
