A Great Cognitive and Kinesthetic Activity for Pre-Kinders

J is for Jellyfish

Just for something different, I came up with this easy, quick, and cute rendition on a jellyfish.

First, start off with cupcake paper baking cups. I chose pastels for spring.
Next, cut a length of yarn into 4 somewhat equal lengths.

Fold the cupcake paper in half and glue one end of each yarn piece inside.

Glue the back of the cupcake paper onto your presentation paper/construction paper.

Allow the cupcake paper to stay "out" (don't glue it down on top of the yarn. It gives the jellyfish a 3D effect.

And, voila! You have a neat little jellyfish!
Try the blue cups with blue yarn, green cups with green yarn, and so forth, for a multi-colored ocean full of jellyfish!

The Seasons - A Science Project/Activity, with a Freebie!

 We've been studying the four seasons, so I decided to conclude the unit by having the children make little booklets.

Step One, Day One:
I took 3 sheets of paper (I had lots of colored paper to utilize), folded them in half, and stapled together. The students put the title on the front cover, and their names. I had to laugh at how many wrote the word "name", instead of their names. LOL!

Following that, they wrote WINTER on the first page, SPRING on the next page, SUMMER on the next, and finally FALL.

Step Two, Day Two:
I gave each child a copy of the seasonal calendar (below). They cut out the months and glued them to the correct page/season.

Step Three, Day Three:
I then collected several pictures off the internet. The students had to pick one picture to represent each season, and include it on that page.

Letter O Activity - "Octopie"

Here's a game we used to help us learn the letter O. We called it "Octopie".

Up to 5 players. You can get all 5 game boards, rules, and pictures to make your little cards here.

You need a playing card, markers, and the little octopi cards. Prior to using the cards, cut and glue pictures of simple CVC words on the back. (I used pictures from old worksheets.)

How to Play:

Player draws a card from the pile. (Or pulls a card from a tissue box.)

Say the word.
Does the word have the short /o/ sound?

If their answer is correct, they get to cover one of the Os with a marker.

If their answer is incorrect, no O is covered.

First person to cover all 9 Os wins!

Letter I Activity - Marshmallow Igloos (and a Math Bonus!)

A fellow teacher found a picture of an igloo online, and printed out 2 to a page. The students glued miniature marshmallows to each individual block. Then they graphed how many marshmallows it took, so she got a math concept from it, too!
