The Little Red Box Song

I found my teaching journal with ideas in it, and so here's another little song to help everyone learn everyone else's names.

The Little Red Box Song

Oh, I wish I had a little red box

To put (child’s name) in.

I’d take him/her out and ______(action*)

And put him/her back again.

The Bumblebee Chant

This is a cute little classroom chant that I use primarily at the beginning of the school year so that I and the others can get to know each other's names. But it's also cute to use when a new student enters class, or just to have fun with.

The Bumblebee Chant

Bumblebee, Bumblebee

Won't you say your name for me?

(Child gives his name. Then class repeats the child's name after each chant. Ex: Jason)

Teacher: “Clap it.” - Class claps and says: Jason!

Teacher: “Stomp it.” - Class stomps and says: Jason!

Teacher: “Snap it.” - Class snaps their fingers: Jason!

Teacher: “Pat it.” - Class pats their thighs: Jason!

Teacher: “Yell it.” - Class cups their mouths: JASON!

Teacher: “Whisper it.” - Class: Jason!

(Go to next child.)

Bowling For Words

This is a representation of a bowling game I created for one of my centers. I call it BOWLING FOR WORDS. I used the following letters for the ten pins: A, E, R, M, C, P, N, D, B, T

* Each student in the group gets a piece of paper and writes their name on it.
* They get to roll the ball two times.
* Using the pins they knock down, they try to write down all the words they can make using the letters on the knocked-down pins.
* When everyone has had a turn, the person with the most words wins!

For a variation, they can work in teams (ex: 2 teams of 2 students in each).

Sight Word Hunt

My school gets newspapers for educational purposes, and I was looking for some different and fun ways to review and enforce sight words that didn't involve worksheets.

I'm also big on recycling, and I have a pile of colored sheets that used to be announcements/lunch menus/newsletters for home. Taking some of those sheets, I wrote three sight words at the top, and gave a sheet to each table. I also gave each table two sheets of newspaper.

First table to find 5 of each word and glue them to their paper won!

Note! If you don't have newspaper, catalogs work well, too!

My Name Math - and a Freebie!

This is such a fun activity! Basically, each student takes the number of letters in his first and last name, and adds them together. Then he gets to add together his first name, and the first name of a friend, to get a sum. (In fact, he gets to do this with two friends.)
