My Students Survived the First Day of School, and So Did I!

Today was the first day of school. Instead of teaching Pre-Kindergarten, as I had expected, I was moved back to Kinder. My experiment I mentioned on Friday worked like a dream. I only had one crier, but often throughout the day I would see a student take out their family picture from their table bucket and keep it nearby as they did their desk work. Those pictures became their "emergency hug", and I'm definitely going to do the family portraits again next year!

An Update on Fred

Back when school first began, I started a little experiment. I bought a fairy door (see pic) and installed it in my room. I told the class that a fairy named Fred lived there, but that he was terrified by loud noises. Hence, he would only come out when it got quiet. (Remember, forests are quiet places.) Usually after school.

Every so often the children will come into class and discover a little mound of starbursts candy, or other treats, covered in "fairy dust". Or they'd find things hanging from the ceiling that weren't there the day before.

In short, my kids love Fred. When they're good, he "rewards" them. Once in a while, when they're a bit out of control, he'll put a frowny face on the whiteboard. But the students have started bringing him little things to eat, like acorns and apple slices, and leave them by his door. Funnier still, a child will come up to me and say she saw Fred peering at her from behind the door.

One of the things I love most about teaching this grade and age level is that the children still believe in wishes, dreams, fairies, and fairy tales. And that allows us as adults to share the joy and laughter that comes with it.

Update

Quick update! The over-population has been resolved! Come Tuesday, I'll have 22 children.

It's going to be a great year! I already see lots of potential and possibilities for success.

Linky Party Update!

Thanks to Jeannie and her Kindergarten Lifestyles blog with her linky party, plus linkies from Pinterest, I've added over a dozen new blogs to my sidebar! In addition, I've also added several ways to follow my blog if you wish. :D
One more side note. I've had to change my icon for my blog replies. I have a second "part time" job as a romance novel writer, and I figured having a romantic icon just wouldn't work on a Kinder-related blog. *rolls eyes, does palm to forehead* So my apologies to those of you who wondered what "that blue icon" was all about.
