Science Fair Experiment - Right or Left?

Here's the question: Does a child's propensity to go right or left at an intersection correlate to whether they're right- or left-handed?

1. Don't discuss this ahead of time with your students. Just tell them you want to try something.
2. Take them to a dividing intersection in the school.

3. Tell them to walk down the hallway and go either right or left. It's their choice, but they cannot tell anyone which way they're going.
4. Tell the class they cannot sway their friends on which way to go.
5. Tally the results.

Back in the classroom, discuss the results.

Compare which is the dominant hand for each child, and which direction they went in the hallway.

Show how this experiment would be presented in a science fair project.

Science Stunts

These were originally meant to entertain guests at parties, but they're just as much fun to watch (and do) in the classroom!

Science Gif - Bending Water With Static Electricity

Sometimes you don't need to show a whole video to instigate a science experiment. Sometimes a brief gif will work.

(Note: If blogger freezes the gif, here's what is happening. Rub the balloon briskly with the towel. Then hold the balloon close to the stream of water. The water will bend toward the balloon!)

Zipper Bag Ice Cream

Here's a quick little activity you can do with your class for fun, or as a science experiment, or with your own kids after school is out.

Ingredients:

1 tbl sugar
1/2 cup whole milk
1/4 tsp vanilla
about 1/2 c. rock salt
sandwich or quart size zipper bag
gallon zipper bag
ice cubes or crushed ice

*Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt.  Seal the bag.
*Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag.  Seal the bag.
*Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
*Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes.
*Wipe off the top of the small bag, and then open it carefully.

Enjoy!
